TLD Dynamic DNS Service for Free
I've used paid dynamic DNS services for years. The original evansclan.org web and e-mail was hosted on servers I had in my home office. I continued to pay for both the domain registration, as well as the dynamic services to point to a top level domain for years. But, the rising costs of this "premium" service forced me to find a cheaper way. I still have my own domain, and parts of it still point to my house network, but I don't pay the premiums.
I still use a dynamic DNS service, but it's implemented differently. Here is what you'll need.
- Top level domain registration and DNS provider, preferably through another provider such as GoDaddy, DreamHost, etc.
- A FREE dynamic DNS account, DynDNS, No-IP, etc.
The setup is simple, with a free dynamic DNS account, we end up with an DNS entry such as "example.dyndns.org". Thanks to the software or router, this will always point to our home internet connection.
Now, we login to our domain/DNS provider and create CNAME records for whichever sub-domains we want to point to our home. For Example:
www.evansclan.org - Points to my web hosting provider's IP address
mail.evansclan.org - Points to my mail provider's IP address
home.evansclan.org - is a CNAME record that points to example.dyndns.org
vpn.evansclan.org - is also a CNAME record that points to example.dyndns.org
This can work for any home or business IP address. So drop the extra $20/month to have a static IP address or $35 a year for premium dynamic DNS services. If you are running your own mail server without relaying through your ISP or need multiple addresses for your office, you may want to stick with static IPs.
